H. C. Koons store sold, 1905 The 1882 ad at top left for Koons' Dry Goods Store comes from Joan Buday. This 1905 North Side news article (left) from Charlie Stumpf noted that Henry C. Koons' store was at that time the oldest business place in Freeland, founded more than 30 years previously (ca. 1874-1875).

Cunningham and Lindsay were both in the 1873 Atlas of Luzerne County list of Freehold businesses (before we were renamed Freeland), and both locations are labeled on the 1873 map among Freeland's earliest businesses.

The Campbell's ad at right came from the 1901 Freeland Tribune, nearly 20 years after it was listed in this directory. Campbell's was at the SW corner of Centre and Main, also known as the Campbell building for years, until it became Dan Gallagher's lunch restraurant and was knownas the Gallagher building; I knew it in the 1950s-1960s as Bertha's. Today it's Adam's antique store.

This ad for Samuel Wenner & Co. general store and grocery is from the 1895 directory. The Neuberger's lucky penny ad button spelled the name of "Freeland's only modern department store" Neuburger's. A photo of the building (on the site later occupied by Woodie's) is on the 19th-century Clothing page.
