(Mini) Parasitic Media: Collaborative Methods for Manipulation (Nathan Martin). In this studio course students will work collaboratively across media including: print, web, video, electronics, performance, and writing on projects that attempt to intervene in communications systems and mainstream media. Students will be shown examples of a small selection of past such works. Brainstorming sessions about both technical and non-technical hacks, exploits, and backdoors for media will be a large part of the course. During the course we will create a project, promote it through a press campaign, and attempt to get exposure for the work with a focus on satire. This is a collaborative course with a strong focus on the emerging field of tactical media. No technical skills are required but those with video, web, programming, and engineering skills are encouraged to register. Non-arts majors are also encouraged to register. Nathan Martin is a Research Fellow with the Carnegie Mellon STUDIO for Creative Inquiry.
