Take a break from your work over mid-semester break to join the OGS for a great day of gaming. This semester, we're celebrating the halfway point of the semester with a giant tournament of Warcraft III. Get the full details and register on-line!
We're planning another event between mid-semester break and finals, but don't have any details as of yet. If you've got an idea for a PC or console game that you'd like to play against the Carnegie Mellon University community, please contact us. Watch this space and the OGS home page for more updates.
Every semester, the OGS partners with the Student Dormitory Council for a gaming event. These events are usually open events as opposed to tournaments, letting people blow off a little steam during a very stressful time. We'll have more information as the time draws nearer.
The OGS maintains semesterly archives of past tournaments and LAN parties. The following semesters are available:
Our fall schedule kicked off with a massive open day of gaming in the West Wing TV Lounge. We had a great turnout of new and returning members, who showed up to play a whole lot of Dance Dance Revolution, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Puzzle Fighter 2, Guilty Gear, and more.
Last semester's Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament attracted 30 two-player teams who showed great skill even though the game had just been released a month earlier. This time around, we had an even larger and more skilled field take part.
The tournament was truly a test of endurance, as 32 two-player teams fought it out in best-of-three stock matches in a double elimination bracket. The action proceeded non-stop on three GameCubes at the same time, with spectators' cheers bolstering the insanity during close matches. In the later rounds, we opened one of the GameCubes for free play leaving two for the final few matches.
The final was truly a sight to behold, as Max Reyes and Darsen Chen took two out of three from the previously undefeated team of Tom Madden and Charley Price to force another best-of-three set. This final set went down to the third match, but Madden and Price prevailed at last and won the tournament in a thriller.
Thank you to all the teams that participated, and congratulations to our winners! They split a GameCube system carrying case, a GameCube game case, and two high-quality DVDs: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.
Today was the famous SCS Faculty vs. Students tournament in Halo, sponsored by Microsoft and run by the OGS. We had quite a good turnout, with thirty-two people playing in the ladder, and 7 SCS faculty members. Those brave souls were Peter Lee, Mark Stehlik, Jim Roberts, Klaus Sutner, Srini Seshan, Catherine Fitchner and Mor Harchol-Balter, who played in the warm-up rounds.
Congratulations to the winners of the event: Matt Trentacoste, Daniel Saldana, Jason Shin and Spike Gronim, who placed first through fourth respectively.
Pictures, movies and the final ladder can be found on OGS Alpha.
Many thanks to all who participated, especially to the faculty members, and to Michelle Lai and MSImpact for hosting the event.
