About the OGS

The Carnegie Mellon Online Gaming Society takes gaming at CMU to the next level. The OGS mission is to promote multiplayer gaming within the Carnegie Mellon community. By holding massive on-campus tournaments for games such as Unreal Tournament, Starcraft, Soul Calibur, Counterstrike, Super Smash Brothers Melee and Warcraft III, the OGS brings together members of the campus community to compete in exciting events for great prizes.

Brief History

The Online Gaming Society was reinstated during the spring semester of 2000 by Joe Round (JoeCool). During this spring the team would go on to win the east coast division, and eventually place second losing their only game to the University of Southern California in a best of nine series by one game, in the HEAT Collegiate Internet Gaming League Championships.

Today, the OGS is an officially recognized student organization dedicated to the encouragement of PC and console gaming within the Carnegie Mellon University community. We run a variety of events every semester, work with other organizations on gaming-related events, and help the university community relax and forget about all the work they're doing.

Current Games

The OGS plays in games including Unreal Tournament, Quake III: Arena, Starcraft, Marathon and Half-Life Counterstrike. The club holds tournaments and LAN parties, utilizing computer clusters on the Carnegie Mellon campus and students' own computers on the Carnegie Mellon network.

Additionally, tournaments in console gaming have been organized. Games including Soul Calibur and Dance Dance Revolution have been played on lecture-hall screens as part of tournaments. If you are interested in a tournament for any game, just stop by any meeting and ask an officer. The best input comes from members themselves.

Acknowledgements

Most of the summer 2001 web design for the OGS was done by Jason Weill. Thanks to Rob Leidle for the original OGS web site, all the past and present executive members for guidance, and Terry Watt for a nifty Perl script. Mad props also to Blogger, which makes web page updates a very simple affair.
