How did you start playing ultimate?

I was debating between trying out for lacrosse and softball, but my friend dragged me to ultimate tryouts. I've been playing since freshman year of high school.

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

8-hour drive to a tournament. A long drive but also a fun team-bonding experience.

Favorite throw or move on the field?

Pull play straight to the end zone

If you could have any body part from anyone on the team, which would you want?

Mimi's fingers so I can point at exactly where I am going

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

I read and watch Netflix a lot. I also enjoy just hanging out with friends even when we are not doing anything in particular. Building personal projects that I will take forever to finish is another favorite activity.

Go-to snack?

Kind bars for sweet and BBQ flavored chips for savory

How did you start playing ultimate?

Just started freshman year for fun and to try something new.

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

The second day of the Delaware tournament where it was cold and raining all day and the field was so wet that we were just sliding around the entire time. We did get Sheetz for lunch though so that kinda made up for it.

Favorite tournament-route meal?

Penn State Creamery and honestly any ice cream stops

Go-to snack?

Kettle chips, ONLY Kettle brand

How did you start playing ultimate?

I started in the spring of my freshman year after becoming friends with members of Yuk and Honeydew. They convinced me to play in a women's Hat Tournament and I ended up having so much fun that I continued playing.

Favorite throw or move on the field?

I'll probably never use it but I love a good hammer.

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

I'm a Tartan Ambassador. If you've ever been on one of my tours, you've heard me talk non-stop about holding The Fence with frisbee. I also dabble in Figure Skating when I have two functioning knees.

How did you start playing ultimate?

I started playing ultimate in sophomore year of high school because I had a friend who was on the men's team. I eventually convinced a bunch of my friends to join with me and the rest is history :)

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

Going to different tournaments but especially the Buffalo tournament (rolling down that giant hill on the fields) also playing in DC and exploring all the monuments with teammates.

Favorite tournament-route meal or car game?

Game: contact. Tournament route meal: anything that is not chipotle.

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

Panini (in sophomore year of high school all the sophomores on the frisbee team got ultimate hoodies and on the back of the hoodies we came up with a food related pun) mine was senini panini.

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

Anything food related, watching basketball, playing neopets lmao

How did you start playing ultimate?

I went to a summer camp at Gesling Stadium when I was 7 (pink skirt, Hello Kitty shoes and all), and the rest is history.

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

Probably day 2 of Delaware Classic this past fall when we surprised ourselves by making it to finals, and ended up playing Pitt A in a mud pit :D. There were some sweet plays, I learned what waterproof paper was, and I lost odds to Ash (as usual) and had to eat an everything bagel that had been sitting on a bleacher in the pouring rain all day (not my finest moment).

Favorite tournament-route meal?

Grapes, snap peas, cantaloupe... yeah definitely some sort of produce.

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

My nickname throughout high school was Stud, which came about out of necessity because we had 5 Sara/h's on my youth club team my freshman year. There had been a preview written on the USA Ultimate website about some spring tournament, and I was referred to as a "freshman stud." My friends thought this was hilarious, and thus my nickname became "young stud," which got shorted to just "stud." I was not a fan of it at first, but it stuck. On the Mellons, I've had a variety of nicknames thrown at me by the nickname queen herself, Hannah Lyness—Simba, Produce Kid (for my love of fruits and veggies)—but as I'm the only Sara, none of them have stuck... yet.

What's your optimal playing weather?

70s, sunny, no humidity, and the slightest of breezes. Pillowy but dry grass field because as much as layouts are fun, wet socks are the worst.

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

A couple months earlier I would've said wdym not playing ultimate :'(. I suppose now the more accurate answer is schoolwork, TAing, doing NYT crosswords, and playing intense games of Sporcle bingo when I really should be sleeping.

Go-to snack?

I love popcorn, but ever since I dropped a disc at a tournament because I had popcorn grease on my hand (and obviously not because I was just bad), I've trusted it less. The other answer is produce, but we all knew that.

How did you start playing ultimate?

I started playing freshman year when I signed up for ultimate with a bunch of people who were on the same floor of my dorm. None of them ended up sticking it out, but I fell in love with the sport!

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

Tournaments are hands-down my favorite part, but there was one tournament where our post-game dinner at Applebee's started with a 2 hour wait, and somehow ended with the entire team obsessed with 'Million Dollar Mile'. It was cancelled after a few episodes, but you can bet that the whole team binge watched those episodes at the next tournament!

Favorite tournament-route car game?

The "how fast is driving too fast, when it's pouring rain at 11pm, visibility is zero, your car is still 30 minutes from the hotel, and you have an assignment due at midnight" game.

If you could have any body part from anyone on the team, which would you want?

How did you start playing ultimate?

As a freshman who didn't know what clubs to join, Shani told me I looked athletic, so should play ultimate. Then I did.

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

Chard - There was a woman on the team my freshman year with the nickname "Crusty and whenever she got a D, people would yell, "That's why we call her Crus-D!" As I started to get better at ultimate, there was a game where I got a D and someone yelled "That's why we call her Char-D!" Someone else realized that was just "chard" like the vegetable, and the name stuck.

If you could have any body part from anyone on the team, which would you want?

Mimi's eyebrows: they're very expressive and half of her facial expressions come from just them. They would enhance my facial movements, but also it would be funny to see her try and communicate without them.

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

I trust Tang so much on the field that I'd wholeheartedly do whatever she said, no questions asked. Pull in the wrong direction? Punch my defender in the face? Done. All kidding aside, when I heard Tang yelling at me from across the field to lay out, I laid out. I don't think the actual layout was that cool (it always feels cooler in your head than it looks on camera), but the team storming the field and dogpiling on top of me afterwards is genuinely one of the happiest moments of my life.

Favorite throw or move on the field?

Busting deep after a turn for a fast break

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

Everyone on the team calls me Ash. At one tournament, the people in my car called me "OLA" (Orange Light Ash) for my tendency to speed through some questionable yellow lights, but thankfully that nickname never stuck.

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

I really enjoy doing NYT crosswords and Sudoku puzzles. During the semester, you'll usually find me doing puzzles at poolside or, admittedly, in an especially boring class.

Go-to snack?

Various things on toast - avocados, peanut butter, tomatoes + ricotta, etc. I swear, there's nothing out there that is not vastly enhanced by slightly warm bread.

Favorite tournament-route car game?

I think some people call it the ratings game. One person, the rater, chooses a category. The other players each use a random a number generator to get a number between 1 and 100. They then pick something in that category that they think the rater will rate as their number. The rater then rates each of the things the other players say and the winner is the person with the smallest number differential.

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

During my freshman year, I think I did or said something dumb and then Elisa was like "haha chicken from moana." But except in her classic Elisa voice so it was more like "CHICKKKKEN FROM MOANNAAA." And it kinda stuck. And then during my sophomore year, I was drinking pickle juice from the jar and spilled it all over myself and then Mimi was like "chickle."

What's your optimal playing weather?

What's your favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

Anytime that we play at our best, even if we don't win (*cough* American). We have a tendency to rise to the challenge when playing better teams. It makes me really proud watching my teammates fight for (and make our opponents fight for) every freakin' point.

Favorite throw or move on the field?

High-release backhand to the breakside, in the rare instance that we actually get forced backhand

Favorite tournament-route meal or car game?

I love having a Panera blueberry bagel. My favorite car game is the ratings game that Foster may have created. It's a super fun way to interact with other cars and discuss the merits of really weird stuff (one such example being the ranking of spring break beds that occurred pre-COVID).

Do you have any ultimate-given nicknames?

When I first joined the team, there was someone else with the name "Annette" on the team who was playing for one more semester. I was tasked with coming up with a nickname for myself and I just went with "Guac", which my high school friend had started calling me as a portmanteau of my last name and her nickname for other friend, "Roc." At first, the name didn't stick (I remember Tang specifically yelling at me "Do you WANT this to be your name? Can you PLEASE respond to it?" in typical Tang fashion), but eventually it stuck long after the one semester I needed it for. So much so that some people may not actually know my real name.

What's your optimal playing weather?

Although I, too, love a balmy 60 degree and sunny playing environment, I really enjoy rainy tournament days with a slight thrower's wind, which is an environment that tends to get a lot of people down. D-line players always gotta hustle, so if you just take advantage and play like you normally do (maybe even better because rainy weather means layout opportunities!), you have a leg up on a lot of people. Just another example of how perspective is everything.

What do you do when you're not playing ultimate?

I'm often holed up somewhere carrying out my duties as wings lead for CMR (CMU's FSAE team). I also try to do a lot of activities that don't involve electronics which include jigsaw puzzle solving, reading, and climbing.

What's your favorite memory of the Mellons?

At one of our final practices in the spring of 2019, we played a wacky scrimmage where you could only score while holding a pool noodle. It was one example of many in which the team willingly tried something I suggested without doubting it first and through that, we helped each other workshop the idea. In this case, the idea was silly and a chance to unwind at the end of the season, but it was hilarious to watch and getting the team to laugh was one of my daily goals.

Favorite throw or move on the field?

A little backhand dish to a handler before scurrying away to get back in the stack

What's your favorite aspect of the game to teach the team?

Definitely offensive strategy. Teaching things like zone offense and horizontal stack cutting are notoriously hard, but seeing it click is incredibly rewarding.

What skills are you proud of the team for developing?

I am proud of the team for developing a lot of skills like swinging the disc as often as possible, finessing their zone defense, and mastering that first in-cut in a vert stack. Above all though, I am proud of them for showing up for each other on the sideline and remaining together as a team, even after the craziness of their 2020 spring semester. The other favorite memory I didn't mention is when one of the rookies last year laid out for the first time for a score and the entire team rushed her on the field to celebrate. The Mellons are maybe not your typical college ultimate team, but they are committed to each other and their love of the sport.

What's your favorite memory of the Mellons?

Sectionals 2019 was the definition of making the best out of unfortunate situations. Weekend #1 was rained out but we ended up having a ton of fun exploring a local park and playing players vs coaches beach ultimate. Weekend #2 was a one-day tournament in Philly where the team battled through insane wind and really stuck together to succeed.
