High quality public schools are essential for our democracy. In this freshman seminar we will examine the history of public education in America as well as the educational reform issues confronting public school systems today. We will analyze educational policy from an historical viewpoint and explore educational reforms including desegregation, decentralization, charter schools and public financing. Our analysis of public education will incorporate discussions, readings, writing assignments, and video presentations. This seminar will focus on critical thinking, writing, and oral communication skills.
