The course emphasizes the electrical, magnetic and optical properties of materials and the principles underlying devices that depend on these properties. The necessary background in quantum mechanics and electromagnetism will be developed as needed. Subjects will include electronic structure and transport properties, dielectric behavior, optical processes, magnetic properties, devices and superconductivity. 4 hrs. lec.
