Assignment on Schoenberg's "Farben"

On p. 424 of Burkhart you will find a reduced score for Schoenberg's orchestral piece op. 16, no. 3, "Farben", aka "Summer Morning by a Lake". A recording is linked on the main listening page.

As stated in Burkhart's introduction, the chord that begins and ends the movement is a referential sonority, returned to at key moments, and also used in transformed versions (pitch, not pitch class, transpositions).

We'll name the various tranpositions by their relationship to the first chord; the first chord is Tp 0, the transposition up one half step is Tp 1, etc.

Answer the following questions about the piece.

What is the set class and interval vector of the referential chord?

Find the places in the score where the chord, or one of its transpositions, appears. Label these appearances by the pitch transposition of the chord (e.g. Tp -3 if it appears transposed down three semitones).

Find the set class and interval vector in each of the following measures: 4, 5, 6, and 7.

At the highest level of form, how many sections are there, and what letter names would be appropriate for those sections? What factors define the form?

Listening through again after this study of the score, are you able to hear the referntial function of the repeated chord and its transpositions?
