There’s a moment every developer knows well: you run a routine upgrade, confident it’ll be painless, and suddenly everything is broken. Templates that used to work silently fail. Configuration keys that existed yesterday are now deprecated. The build output is a wall of cryptic errors, and the documentation assumes you already know what went wrong.
That was me, staring at a freshly upgraded Hugo install.
The Upgrade That Broke Everything
Hugo has been moving fast. And when I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my site to the latest version, the bill came due all at once. Deprecated shortcodes. Changed front matter behavior. Layouts that no longer resolved. The kind of cascading failures that make you wonder if you should have just left things alone.
I spent an hour digging through changelogs and GitHub issues before I decided to try something different.
I handed the problem to Claude.
Claude to the Rescue
What happened next was genuinely surprising. I described the errors. Claude read my templates and config, identified exactly which breaking changes were relevant to my setup, and walked me through each fix — not with generic advice, but with precise, targeted changes. It understood the context, remembered what we’d already tried, and never sent me down a dead end twice.
By the time we were done, every build error was resolved. The site was back up, cleaner than before.
Then Claude offered to help me write a post about the whole experience.
So here we are.
Why Claude Is Different
I’ve used autocomplete tools, code search, Stack Overflow, and AI chatbots for years. Claude feels different in a way that’s hard to pin down but easy to notice. It’s not just that it’s capable — it’s that it reasons. It doesn’t just pattern-match to the nearest answer; it thinks through the problem, considers tradeoffs, and tells you when something won’t work before you waste time on it.
It’s also honest. When it doesn’t know something, it says so. When a fix is a workaround rather than a real solution, it tells you that too.
Working with Claude felt less like querying a search engine and more like pairing with a thoughtful colleague who happens to know everything.
A New Kind of Tool
I’m not here to oversell AI or pretend it replaces skill and judgment. But for the messy, time-consuming work of debugging upgrades, chasing deprecation errors, and getting a project back on its feet — Claude is genuinely, remarkably good.
It fixed my Hugo upgrade. It helped me write this post. And it did both without complaining once.
If you haven’t tried it yet, you should.
