Each semester, approximately fifty students study guitar at Carnegie Mellon University:  classical guitar majors, music education certification students, and students who are not music majors but who have elected to study guitar for credit or non-credit. The Music Preparatory and Extension Division offers guitar lessons to enthusiastic children and adults from the community.

The Music School supports a classical guitar ensemble consisting of eight to twelve players.

Students also have many opportunities to perform chamber music, with flute or voice and guitar being most popular.

The guitar program presents four to six student concerts per school year.

Carnegie Mellon is located in a city with a rich musical culture that includes many opportunities for off-campus performances and many concert-presenting organizations. Students are encouraged to attend concerts and master classes by the many performers who visit Pittsburgh.
