Engineering Analysis Project 1

Project 1

Part 1 (individual project)

The objective of this first part of the project is to allow students to familiar themselves with CFD analysis using ANSYS's FloTrans.

Student will be given all necessary information to determine pressure distribution as well as velocity profile along the flow direction. By area integration, net upward force normal to the inclined plate can be computed.

Part 2 (group project)

Part 2 is very similar to part 1 except that you change the dimension of W from 2 mm to be 0.4mm.

Every step is the same as shown in part 1 of this project with some dimensions adjusted.

Given different value of alphas, each group will be asked to obtain the following information:

  • 3D plot of pressure distribution (contour plot for pressure)
  • 3D plot of velocity profile of the cross section in the middle of the fluid
  • P(x) vs. x when z = -W/2 and y = 0 (on the top surface)
  • V(y) vs. y where x = 0 and z = -W/2 (-1mm)
  • Total upward normal force on the stationary slider (by integrating the pressure or by summing up nodal forces)

Part 3 (group project)

Given values of a and Fz(normal force acting downward on the slider), each group will have to determine the minimum separation distance between slider and hard disk, b2, using ANSYS's FLOTRAN.

Each group will be required to obtain a plot of Fz vs. b2 for a given value of a. Therefore, each group must repeat the calculation to find Fz for different values of b2. And plot the graph. Please note that when changing b2, the value of b1 changes in order that a remains unchanged.

There will not be any tutorial for this part of the project.
