This course seeks to explore the development of the music of American Blacks from its genesis among black slaves in the 17th century up to the sophisticated art music of black composers in the 20th and now the 21st century. The importance of African Americans in the development of the many styles of jazz is well known, but the general concert-going public far less recognizes the remarkable diversity of the music produced by Blacks throughout the past 300 years. Although it is certainly necessary to include jazz in any discussion of music in the 20th century, this course will make reference to it only within the context of the broader study of music by black composers. Students in the course will have reading and listening assignments, in addition to the intense discussion of the information found in the text. Class sessions will include lectures, general discussions, presentation of reports and listening sessions. Expert guest lecturers will be presented, when possible. Evaluation will be based on grades received for assigned reports, two general examinations (mid-term and final), and one research paper.
