This course provides a comprehensive survey of Africa's economic, social, and political development. The first part will focus on economic issues. Every sector of the economy - agriculture, trade, industry, financial markets, employment - will be analyzed and their performance over the past 40 years evaluated. The second part will concentrate on major social and political issues. Topics will include: health, AIDS, education, population, political instability, conflicts, corruption. Students will be also asked to choose a country and apply general trends and theories in African development to their specific country.
