98-055 Student Taught Courses (StuCo): Introduction to Chinese Cinema

Units:3.0
Department:StuCo
Related URLs:http://www.cmu.edu/

The purpose of this course is to promote awareness of and appreciation for Chinese cinema. A critical eye will be taken towards such acclaimed films as Farewell My Concubine, Raise the Red Lantern, and To Live. Not limited to just the classics, we will also be viewing more recent selections and less well known offerings. Class time will average to about three films every four weeks, with the fourth week set aside for discussion and analysis in the greater context of Chinese culture. All films are in Mandarin with English subtitles, so knowledge of the Chinese language is not assumed.
