(Spring 2005) France in Revolt, 1789-1871: This course examines 3 case studies of social, political and cultural revolt in France from 1789 to 1871, including the great Revolution of 1789-94, the Revolution of 1848, and the Paris Commune of 1871. It studies these episodes of revolt using such sources as political discourse, literature, painting, music, photography, and cinema as well as historical writings, approaching the theme of revolution from the standpoints of comparative social-cultural history and cultural studies. While our focus will often be on the city of Paris itself, we shall also look at such important themes as the relationship between city and countryside.
