Students will work with the editor of FOCUS to report and write news and feature stories for FOCUS, the monthly newspaper published by the Carnegie Mellon Faculty Senate. Students' stories progress through a series of drafts and are eventually published in the newspaper. The weekly course meetings are geared toward development of reporting and writing skills. Typically we spend time discussing practical problems in newsgathering; presenting stories-in-progress; analyzing published stories; and talking with visiting journalists. Each student is required to publish three or four stories during the term, including a longer project.
