91-817 Resource Development of Non-Profits

Units:6.0
Department:Public Management
Related URLs:http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/

Prerequisites: 91-816 Planning and Management of Nonprofit Organizations Every decision made by a manager has a resource implication. Resource development involves assuring that the organization you manage has the financial and human resources necessary to carry out its mission and maintain organizational financial stability. This course will approach resource development within a marketing context. The changing environment in corporate and foundation grant making, federated fund-raising campaigns, attitudes towards fees for service, public sector involvement, and approaches to donors will be reviewed. Students will participate in development and critiquing of grant proposals and resource development plans for a number of agencies representing the breadth of the nonprofit sector and will have the opportunity to discuss their grant write-ups individually with the instructor, a foundation program officer, as part of the experience. A combination of lecture and discussion of actual cases will be used to cover the class topics. Each student will be required to complete a marketing questionnaire on an assigned agency as background, develop and submit two grant proposals, and analyze proposals to be presented in class. Each student will also be assigned to a group project, a resource development plan. In the past students have used the grants and resource development plans completed in this course as work samples for future employers.
