About NACADA

The 2003 Conference Committee invites you to submit a proposal for a presentation or a pre-conference workshop. Our conference theme, The Advising-Teaching Connection, gives both full-time and faculty advisors the opportunity to share ideas, insights, and strategies for helping students to achieve their educational goals in related ways. Many of the qualities we associate with teaching are qualities that are equally characteristic of advising, such as helping students develop problem-solving and decision-making skills, and imparting knowledge. Both teachers and advisors need to rely on an understanding of the way students learn. When done well, advising is teaching, and teaching is advising.

Both faculty advisors, full-time advisors, and others who serve students are invited to present sessions on topics related to this intersection of advising and teaching. Such welcome topics include applying models of student learning and development, teaching strategies that work for advising, advisors' perceptions of their roles as educators, and faculty’s perceptions of their roles as advisors.

Conference presentation options include:

Pre-Conference Workshop
Pre-Conference workshops may be scheduled for 2 or 3 hours. These workshops are to be scheduled prior to the conference. We are looking for proposals that have broad-based appeal - whether personally or professionally. Participants may be charged a small fee for these pre-conference workshops.

Concurrent Session
This format is intended for a standard presentation involving one or more presenters and lasting approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The design of the presentation should allow for information sharing as well as active discussion between presenters and participants.

Roundtable
A discussion session where presentations are limited to short general commentaries that stimulate audience participation and group discussion. The time allocation for this format is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The presenter is responsible for bringing ideas to facilitate a group discussion.

Proposals are due November 15, 2002.
