4B. Apply External Loads

Depending on what type of problem you are trying to solve, you should now apply the loads to your part whether they be forces, pressures, temperatures, electric potentials, etc. Since this beam is to be subjected to 4 point bending, equal concentrated loads should be applied to the beam at x =8in and x = 16 in.

PREPROCESSOR -> Loads

      LOADS ->

DEFINE LOADS ->Apply

                     APPLY -> Force/Moment

                           FORCE/MOMENT -> On Lines

ANSYS GRAPHICS WINDOW -> With the left mouse button, select the nodes at the top of the beam and at x = 8in. and x = 16in. Then click APPLY in the APPLY F/M ON NODES window.

APPLY F/M ON NODES -> For "Direction of Force/Moment" Choose FY

APPLY F/M ON NODES -> For "Force/Moment value" enter the load in pounds. For this example enter -1000. It is negative so that the forces are pointing downward.

APPLY F/M ON NODES -> Click OK

Two arrows should appear on the beam as shown in the figure below.

NOTE: These arrows will appear at the bottom of the beam despite picking the points on the top of the beam.
