4. Apply Pressure and Symmetry Boundary Conditions

In this problem, we have to impose the constant pressure whose magnitude is 1000 lb/in^2, on line B. Moreover, the symmetry conditions need to be applied along line C and D. In this case, the pressure is compressive, therefore, we have to enter in -1000 lb/in^2 for compressive loading.
Here are the steps showing how to apply pressure on line B.

PREPROCESSOR -> Loads

      LOADS ->
DefineLoads

DEFINE LOADS ->Apply

                     APPLY -> Structural -> Pressure

                           STRUCTURAL PRESSURE -> On Lines

Click on line B which is at the top of the plate. After you have clicked on line B and click OK, then you should see the image similar to the one below.

Click on constant value and enter in -1000 which tells ANSYS that the pressure is compressive and has magnitude of 1000 lb/in^2.

Now the arrows should appear as in the figure below.

The next step is to apply symmetry on line C and line D. To apply symmetry on lines, follow the steps below.

PREPROCESSOR -> Loads

      LOADS ->
DefineLoads

DEFINE LOADS ->Apply

                     APPLY -> Structural Displacement

                           STRUCTURAL DISPLACEMENT -> Symmetry B.C.

                                       SYMMETRY B.C. -> On Lines

Then click on line C and line D. Click OK.

Then the letter "S" should appear on the screen.

The next step is to have ANSYS solve for displacements of the elements near the crack and stresses along line D.
