Matt Kaar

Matt Kaar works as Team Lead, DoD Cyber Exercise Development in the CERT Division, a part of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He has more than 15 years of experience working in information security. Since joining the SEI in 2010, Matt has supported the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and now leads a team that builds cutting-edge cyber training and exercises for the Department of Defense. He specializes in applying software development and automation practices towards solving complex information security problems. Matt is also a member of the adjunct faculty of Carnegie Mellon's Information Networking Institute. Prior to joining the SEI, Matt was a lead engineer at The MITRE Corporation and supported cross domain solutions deployment within the DoD. He has also served in information security roles at the Federal Aviation Administration and IBM Internet Security Systems. Matt earned a B.S. in Computer Science with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a M.S. in Information Security Technology and Management from the Information Networking Institute at CMU.

Chris Herr

Chris Herr is a senior engineer and team lead for the Cyber Workforce Development directorate in the CERT division, a part of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Chris has over 12 years of experience at the SEI developing and facilitating cybersecurity and forensics training courses and content including demonstration videos and interactive hands-on exercises and assessments. Chris currently supports the Department of Homeland Security, but previously led a 3-year project for the Army Reserves Cyber Operations Group and has served numerous other DoD, civilian, and law enforcement agency customers within the U.S. government. Chris has also served as an adjunct faculty member for the Heinz College since 2015, teaching the Network Defenses course and serving as a capstone project advisor. Prior to his time at the SEI, Chris served four years as a non-commissioned officer in the Finance Corps as a vendor pay analyst and contract certifying officer at Fort Bragg, NC and abroad in Mosul, Iraq. Chris has a B.S. in Economics and a M.S in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as a graduate certificate in Teaching and Learning from Norwich University.
