It turned out that the earth underneath the center part of the house was criss-crossed by 4" deep concrete footings supporting the center bearing wall and plates that, in turn, supported the first-floor joists, some of which showed extensive termite damage. I had to remove these footings in order to remove the earth underneath. I replaced the footings by temporary beams supported by posts on new concrete foundations. This temporary support was later replaced by a permanent structure after consultations with a structural engineer and the building inspector.
