In the following three activities, you will find various excerpts written by experts in a specific or technical area. Although they believe their writing was fine, their supervisors have advised them to make their message understood by non-technical audiences too.

These non-tech audiences are well-educated, but their understanding of the technical terms is limited.

Try to select the most appropriate options so that the experts can communicate to the non-technical audience most effectively.

Guide

  • When you are making a judgment about something (either quantity or quality), avoid using intense words that sound subjective, such as “huge” “incredible” “gigantic” “fantastic” etc.
  • Try to state what your judgement is based off of . (e.g., Instead of just stating something is “significant” “large” or “small,” what those judgments can be compared?)
