Familiarize Yourself with Building Fire Exits
Your workplace building must have at least two means of escape to be used in a fire emergency
Do not block or lock fire doors. This can prevent emergency use when employees are in the building
Have Portable Fire Extinguishers
Be sure that your fire extinguishers are approved and are in good operating condition
Instruct those employees expected to use fire extinguishers on how to use them properly
How to Inspect Your Fire Extinguishers
Map out the locations of your fire extinguishers in your work area and post them for co-workers
Look at the gauge and feel
the weight. Is the extinguisher
full? Does it need to be
recharged?
Use a Fire Sprinkler System
A properly designed and installed fire sprinkler system enhances fire safety in the workplace
Automatic sprinkler systems are among the most reliable systems
Emergency Evacuation Plan
Train employees on what to do in case of a fire
Install employee alarm services throughout the workplace
Create an emergency evacuation plan that describe the routes to use and the procedures to be followed by employees This is required
How to Evacuate a Building
STAY LOW
DO NOT USE ELEVATORS
under any circumstances
GO TO AN EXIT as outlined in
the emergency evacuation plan
 Have a Written Fire
Prevention Plan
You must implement a written fire prevention plan to accompany the evacuation plan
You must make all employees aware of the potential fire hazards of their jobs
Your Written Management Plan Should Include
Emergency escape procedures
An assignment of duties
Route assignments
A recovery plan
A list of major fire hazards
Managers Take Note!
If you want employees to fight small fires rather than evacuate the building, you must document this in the written management plan
Never Fight a Fire…
If the fire is spreading rapidly
If the fire can block your only escape
In Case of a Fire
NEVER stop to take anything with you!
NEVER go back into a burning building!
ALWAYS leave the building immediately!
If You Catch on Fire…
STOP - where you are
DROP - to the floor
ROLL - around on the floor
If Co-workers Catch on Fire…
Make sure they stop, drop, and roll. If they can’t or don’t, assist them.
Smother flames with a blanket, rug, or large item of clothing and wrap them in it.
