Preliminaries - Library Services
Get a list of companies in the finance industry:
- Dun & Bradstreet's Million Dollar Database – do an advanced search, and use NAICS codes starting with 52 for financial companies
- CareerSearch database - creates lists of companies with basic information and contacts. You'll need to create an account first - "client referral" is cmu04.
- Hoover ’s Online – click on "Build a List" and then open the Industry section and "browse" the NAICS codes, choosing what you're interested in. (You'll also want to limit by location, as this is international.) For just the top companies, locate a company you are interested in, then check “competitors” on left hand side.
- Security Dealers of North America - in Standard & Poor's database, 5000 brokerage and investment banking firms and their branches in the U.S. and Canada, description and contacts - can search by location
- Directory of Investment Managers - Hunt reference room - HG4907 .N44
- Corporate Finance Sourcebook - Hunt reference room - HG4057 .A1565

- CISDM Hedge Fund Data (through WRDS platform) - database with qualitative and quantitative information for over 5,000 hedge funds, funds of
funds, CTAs and CPOs.

- Top 100 Hedge Funds ranked by Alpha Magazine
- Barclay Hedge database of over 6000 hedge funds - apparently anyone can have free access if you tell them you have a net worth of $1m or are in a similar category

Find quick background on a specific company:
- Hoover's Online - includes U.S. public and private, and international companies; company leadership, history and description, financials, products, etc.
- Business & Company Resource Center – company basics, histories, and an excellent source for news. articles – find your company and use tabs at the top for many features. Use “Article Search” for smaller companies.
- Standard & Poor’s Netadvantage – for public companies - use Companies tab at the top.
- LexisNexis Academic - has an extensive "company dossier" for thousands of companies. To get it, click on the "Business" tab at the top. All of the sections can be expanded for more information, including the sections at the left.
- Vault.com – from the COC, will tell you what it’s like to work there. (Password: game.)
News sources about companies and industries: (There is some overlap among these, but also many unique items in each one.)
- Proquest – contains articles in newspapers, magazines, trade publications and scholarly journals.
- Business & Company Resource Center – industry news and journal articles from all over the world
- Lexis-Nexis Academic– has the most wide-ranging international, national and local news.
- bizjournals.com - business newspapers for major cities; excellent source for indepth local business reporting
Job search and interviewing tips :
- Speed-read a book! Find one through CAMEO, using keywords such as "finance and vocational"
- Examples: Starting your career as a Wall Street Quant; The Harvard Business School guide to finding your next job; Heard on the street: quantitative questions from Wall Street job interviews; Killer investment banking resumes, etc.
- Vault.com – from the COC (password: game), has downloadable books on interviews, top companies, etc. Click on "Industry Career Guides" for books like: Vault Finance Interviews Practice Guide, Vault Guide to the Top Financial Services Employers, etc.
