What are databases? How are they different from what I find on Google?
Databases that are bibliographic lead you to articles and other types of publications - including books and encyclopedias - so that you can locate published information on a specific topic. Other databases provide other information such as statistics, financial data, images, mapping applications, survey results, lists of companies, etc. Google will lead you mainly to websites, some of which may have this information, and some of which do not. Databases cost money, and their contents are controlled, vetted, and reliable. Google is free, and contains the whole world. (Google Scholar contains primarily scholarly publications and is different from plain Google - see below.)

Online journal list – here you can see whether a particular journal is contained in one of our databases. (If it isn't there, we may have it in print - check the catalog to find out.)
What is peer-review? What are scholarly publications? How can I find them?
Peer review is the process by which an article or book is submitted for rigorous impartial review by experts before it is published. Scholarly publications are those which publish peer-reviewed work.
Academic OneFile – cross-disciplinary database of over 12,000 journals for academic research.
JSTOR - historical collections of important academic journals in all fields; usually covers a span up to 2 years before the present.
PsycINFO - premier international database for psychology and related fields, which includes journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, dissertations.
ABI/INFORM Global – articles from scholarly and trade sources, and dissertations, on business conditions and trends, management practice and theory, corporate strategy and tactics, and the competitive landscape.
Berkeley Electronic Press - peer-reviewed articles in economics, business, law, engineering and political science.
Science Direct – starting in 1995, full-text journals in the areas of economics, accounting, computing, engineering, biology, operations research and environmental studies.
Dissertation Abstracts – summaries of dissertations and theses in the English language in all disciplines.
Google Scholar - a great shortcut to scholarly articles, especially if you know the one you're looking for.
TIP: for all databases, use the Advanced Search option for more controlled results.
How are scholars linked to each other? How can I find experts?
Web of Science – citations for scholarly literature of the sciences, social sciences and the arts & humanities, including articles, proceedings, editorials, letters, meeting reports and book reviews. Its special feature is that the citations in each work can be searched. For instance, you can take a known relevant paper and find all the other papers that cite it, and build a comprehensive literature review.
What about reports from associations, research organizations, governments?
INFORMS PubsOnline provides access to ten journals published by INFORMS, the professional association for operations research and management science. Articles come from the fields of engineering, management, mathematics and psychology.
Academy of Management - leading professional association for scholars and practitioners dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations. Its journals:

Academy of Management Learning & Education

And what about after you graduate? Tepper provides access to ABI-Inform, the primary management research database, to alumni. Also, the public libraries in many large and enlightened cities offer business database access. Here's a way to search for the public library in your area - then look for "online resources" which are available once you get your free library card.
