Background on an industry
NAICS and SIC Codes
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code systems classify industries numerically. They are often used to categorize business information by industry; many of the resources listed above use them.

Demographics and market information
Background on companies
- Hoover's Online - includes U.S. public and private, and international companies; company leadership, history and description, financials, products, etc.
- Business & Company Resource Center - company chronologies, histories and journal articles grouped by business functions like marketing, R&D, strategy, etc.
- (Don't forget there are books on major companies as well.)
News sources about companies and industries:

- Company presentations - find them in the Investor Relations section of the company website
