Working with AFS, UNIX and other resources at CMU
Andrew is a distributed computing system available at CMU. We will be
using the Andrew File System (AFS) to set up our directories that can
be browsed on the Web. In addition to the handouts I will provide in
class, the following set of online resources will prove useful in
understanding AFS, UNIX, and other related tools.

Polaris is a new online
web-based help system available at CMU. It contains an
introduction to UNIX.

Emacs is a text editor available on AFS. An
introduction to Emacs is also available on Polaris.

You should become familiar with Telnet
which we will use to connect from your Windows-based PC's to the
Andrew UNIX Servers. Note that Telnet from Windows is very easy to use
and I will demonstrate it to you in the tutorial I will conduct. The
version of Telent described on Polaris is different but I am pointing
you to it in order that you get a sense for what Telnet is all about.

You should become familiar with ftp
which we will use to transfer files from your Windows-based PC's to
the Andrew UNIX Servers. As with Telnet, you will find FTP easy to use
under Windows. Also the versio of ftp I have pointed you toward shows
you the basic ftp command. No fears, all this is made transparent by
the Windows ftp utility.
