BIOGRAPHY

I study how the pervasiveness of video streaming services affects consumers and firms in the entertainment industry. This includes understanding how peer effects shape the consumption of experience goods and how recommender systems affect consumer choice. My work also focuses on the impact of digital technologies on educational outcomes. This requires understanding how teachers and students use technologies, face-to-face and remotely, to improve learning processes. Most of my research is devoted to analyzing large datasets obtained from organic in-vivo randomized field experiments.

My work has been published in top journals in information systems and marketing, such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, Management of Information Systems Quarterly, Journal of Management of Information Systems, Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research. I am the recipient of the 2018 INFORMS Information Systems Society Early Career Award and top 25 worldwide research scholar in information systems according to the rankings from the Association for Information Systems for the period 2020-2022. I serve as Associate Editor for Management Science and served as Associate Editor for the Management of Information Systems Quarterly between 2017-2020.

I hold a BSc in Computer Science from Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), a MSc in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a MSc in Technology Policy and Management, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a PhD in Telecommunications Policy from CMU. I served as a teaching assistant at MIT and at IST and as an invited lecturer at Catolica-Lisbon and at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. I served as a post-doctoral fellow at the School of Information at UC Berkeley and as an Assistant Professor at IST, before moving to CMU. I am also an invited Professor of Information Systems Management and Data Analytics at the Nova School of Business and Economics.
