| program notes: | "Energy Shifts" flows forth in the composer's familiar post-minimalist palette of lush instrumental colors and ornate, lively percussion. As with much of Galbraith's wind music, it comes at you in roughly A-B-A form with richly interwoven instrumentation peppered with a dancing array of drums and mallets. The outer sections are gleefully energetic, framing an extensive central landscape that is deceptively calm, with subtle but relentless underlying rhythms. The music closes in a joyous extended fanfare leading to Galbraith's signature abrupt "That's all folks!" ending. This work, in one movement of about seven minutes, was commissioned by the preeminent North Texas Wind Symphony, whose recording of the composer's "Danza de los Duendes" in 1998 (Wind Catchers – Klavier Records) essentially jump-started her prominence in the wind ensemble universe.
