Women's Cross Country

Saturday the Carnegie Mellon competed in the Dickinson College Cross Country Invitational. The Tartans placed fifth out of the 28-team event. Brooke Cutler (Altadena, Calif./Polytechnic) finished fourth with a time of 18:51. Carnegie Mellon will be participating in the Duquesne Invitational on October 16.

Carnegie Mellon grabbed in 1-0 victory at home in a steady rain. Freshman Adam Hibshman (Myerstown, Pa/Eastern Lebanon) scored an unassisted goal in the game's second minute. The Tartan defense has not surrendered a goal in the last five games. Senior Ben Kartzman (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

On October 3, Carnegie Mellon faced University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Washington University in St Louis. The Tartans won the game in overtime by a score of 2-1. Senior Eric Hopper (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) scored in the 90th minute, which forced the game into extra time. In the 98th minute David Zupon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair)converted off feed fromSteve Tepper (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown).

Last Wednesday, Carnegie Mellon defeated cross-town foe Point Park 6-1. The Tartans jumped out to a 4-0 first half lead. Doug Jones (Herndon, Va./Thomas Wooten) and Matt DiGiacomo (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored two goals each. David Zupon and Steve Tepper added second half goals. David Zupon now leads the team with eight goals on the season.

This weekend Carnegie Mellon tied Emory University, who is ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, 0-0 in overtime. In an equal game, both teams had 16 shots on the afternoon. The Tartans remain undefeated in UAA play. Ben Kartzman stopped seven shots to earn his seventh shutout this year.

On Sunday Carnegie Mellon took on New York University. Again the Tartans finished with a 0-0 draw. Ben Kartzman added his eighth shutout on the season. Kartzman now has a .5 goals against average. Carnegie Mellon is ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region.

Women's Soccer (4-5-2, 0-3-1)

On October 3, Carnegie Mellon lost to Washington University in St. Louis 3-0. Carnegie Mellon was outshot 16-5. Freshman Maya Nigrosh (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) collected four saves.

Friday October 8, Carnegie Mellon ran into undefeated UAA foe Emory University. Although the Tartans put eight shots on goal, they could not put the ball in the net. Maya Nigrosh stopped three Emory shots. She has saved 59% of the shots she has faced.

On Sunday Carnegie Mellon tied New York University 1-1 in overtime, to break a three match-losing streak. Junior Kim Celone (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) scored her first goal of the season to give the Tartans the draw. Carnegie Mellon's next match will be October 15 at Grove City College.

Men's Tennis

On October 3 Carnegie Mellon participated in the ITA Men's East Championships at Swarthmore College. The doubles team of Kayvon Fatahalian (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and Jonathan Hui (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) won the doubles championships. This win qualifies the freshmen for the national championships. Fatahalian and Hui defeated Franklin Marshall's Steve Olex and Rami Abdal-Misih in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Fatahalian and Hui will play in the national small college championships in Memphis, Tenn. later this month. By advancing to the national championship Fatahalian and Hui were named All-Ameriacns. The pair are the first All-Americans in school history.

Women's Volleyball (24-5, 6-2)

Carnegie Mellon defeated Penn State-Altoona 15-10, 15-6, 15-6 last week. Sarah Putaro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the Tartans with 28 assists. On Saturday, the Tartans beat Carlow College 15-11, 15-3, 15-3. Stephanie Szobota (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) led the Tartans with 12 kills. Sarah Putaro added another 36 assists. Carnegie Mellon has a record of 24-5, and a 5-0 record at home this season. Carnegie Mellon's 24 wins surpasses last year total of 23 wins. The Tartans are ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region.
