CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY SPORTS ROUND UP

Women's Soccer (1-1, 0-0)

Results: Carnegie Mellon 8 Washington Jefferson 0 Johns Hopkins 2 Carnegie Mellon 0

The Tartans opened their 1999 season with an offensive explosion. They defeated local foe Washington and Jefferson 8-0. Freshman Allison Styer (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) led the way with 3 goals. Sophomore Ashley Wermine (West River, Md./ Southern) added a goal and an assist. Junior Alex Summers (Peterborough, N.H./Contoocoock Valley) earned a shutout in her first varsity start.

Labor Day, the Tartans faced a tough Johns Hopkins team. The Tartans controlled the ball on the offensive end, out shooting Johns Hopkins 13-9. Carnegie Mellon also more corner kick opportunities however Carnegie Mellon lost by a score of 2-0. Next the Tartans will host Allegheny College at 4:30 pm.

Men's Cross Country (1-0, 0-0)

Results: Carnegie Mellon 15 California (PA) 50

The men's cross country team dominated California University of Pennsylvania. Carnegie Mellon took the first five spots in Saturday's dual meet. Senior Brian Meyer (Troy, MI/ Troy Athens) finished 1st with a time of 27:19. Following Meyer are teammates Ken Oldham , Eric Egenolf (Freehold,N.J./Freehold), Matt Denerline, and Zach Negin (Washington Grove, M.D./Gaithersburg).

Women's Cross Country (2-0, 0-0)

Results: Carnegie Mellon 17 California (PA) 45 Pittsburgh-Johnstown 82

The women opened their 1999 campaign with a tri-meet victory over California University of Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Brooke Cutler (Altadena, Calif/Polytechnic) won the meet with a time of 20:05. Teammates Andrea Byrnes (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Kelly Chin (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) rounded out the top three slots.

Men's Soccer (1-0, 0-0)

Results: Carnegie Mellon 6 Pittsburgh-Greensburg 0

Seniors David Huryk (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and John Petrillo(Toms River, N.J./Ranney School) led the Tartans in their 6-0 victory over University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg. Huryk collected 2 goals and an assist while Petrillo added 4 assists. Also senior Ben Kartzman (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) earned his first shutout of the season. Next Tuesday the Tartans will be at Franklin & Marshall for a 2 p.m. match.

Semi-Finals: Carnegie Mellon 0 Muskingham 3

Carnegie Mellon opened the weekend with two shutout victories over Shawnee State and Mount Union. On Saturday, The handled a tough Siena Heights team in 5 games 12-15, 15-11, 15-10, 10-15, 15-6. Carnegie Mellon ended weekend with a fourth place finish and a 3-2 record. The Tartans lost to eventual champ Muskingum 15-11, 15-6, 15-11. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Schmidt (Wellsville,Ohio/Wellsville) earned all-tournament honors. Schmidt led the team with 4.1 digs per game and 3.5 kills per game. Senior setter Sarah Putaro (Pittsburgh, Pa/Baldwin) led the team with 224 assists and a 12.4 per game average.
