The American Psychological Association was founded by G. Stanley Hall leftt), of Clark University.Active mainly in the study of child development and education, Hall was the first American to obtain a PhD in Psychology.

One of Hallís dissertation advisors was William James (center), author ofThe Principles of Psychology, Varieties of Religious Experience, and other influential works.
