HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY

 

The American Psychological Association was founded by G. Stanley Hall leftt), of Clark University.  Active mainly in the study of child development and education, Hall was the first American to obtain a PhD in Psychology.

One of Hall’s dissertation advisors was William James (center), author of  The Principles of Psychology, Varieties of Religious Experience, and other influential works.

 

Margaret Floy Washburn (right) was the first American woman to earn a doctorate in Psychology.  She was known for her experimental work on animal behavior and motor theory development.
