Question 15

This statement is false.  Undergraduates are entitled to use interlibrary loan.

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

No library has everything that faculty and students need for their research.

Libraries have developed a co-operative service called Interlibrary Loan that will get books, articles, and other materials from other libraries at no cost.

Everyone at Carnegie Mellon is welcome to use Interlibrary Loan  However, it can take from 3 days to 2 weeks for materials to arrive.  If you need the item sooner, it would be smarter to walk over to the University of Pittsburgh or the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and check out the book or consult the journal there.

What is E-ZBorrow?

If you want to borrow a book that Carnegie Mellon doesn’t have, start with E-ZBorrow.  The ID number for E-Z Borrow is the 9-digit code at the bottom of your Carnegie Mellon ID card. After logging in at http://palci.library.pitt.edu/%7Eursa/CMU_login.html , enter the author, title, subject or ISBN of the book you are looking for.  E-ZBorrow will search the catalogs of academic libraries in Pennsylvania and nearby states (e.g. Rutgers, West Virginia U.).  You can place an order for the book and receive an e-mail notification when it arrives, usually within 3 to 5 days.

You will be blocked from requesting any book that is in the Carnegie Mellon collection, however, even if it is checked out.

What is ILLiad?

If you don’t find the book in E-Zborrow or you are looking for other kinds of materials, you should use ILLiad.

You can get journal articles, newspapers, books, microforms, theses, and some dissertations.

You usually can’t get multimedia items, reference books, entire issues or volumes of periodicals, some newspapers, computer software, rare books or manuscripts.

How do I Register for ILLiad?

The first time you use ILLiad, you must register and set up an account.  Go to https://illiad.library.cmu.edu/illiad/FirstTime.html

After you’ve set up your account with a user ID and password, you’ll be able to submit Interlibrary Loan requests easily.  You can either type the information on the form provided or link to ILLiad from within a database. For example, if you have found an article in PsycINFO that Carnegie Mellon doesn’t have, click on the GETIT icon.  It looks like this:
