Nandita Rai

I am currently a Masters student at CMU studying Biomedical Engineering. I completed my Bachelors in Materials Science Engineering and Biomedical Engineering from CMU in May 2025. I am part of Professor Taylor's lab, contributing to the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis via genetic material delivery through DNA origami.

Current Projects

Working to utilize DNA origami and extracellular vesicles to deliver genetic material for treatment of Cystic Fibrosis.

Previous Experience

AstraZeneca, Downstream Purification Continuous Manufacturing (Intern) Summer 2024 - Designed and executed experiments to bridge implementation gaps for new purification process for monoclonal antibody drugs. - Conducted studies to validate design of viral inactivation process. - Proficient in affinity and ion exchange chromatography techniques.

AstraZeneca, Process Analytics (Intern) Summer 2023 - Utilized liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy to analyze raw material components of cell media. - Developed Python script for data preprocessing - Used SIMCA (multivariate statistical analysis tool) to compare and contrast amino acids within these raw material components. - Achieved Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.

CMU Biomedical Engineering Capstone Project (Team Leader)
Fall 2024-Spring 2025 - Developed a Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) based surface coating for insulin pump tubing to minimize aggregation of insulin molecules.
- Conducted extensive formulation testing to achieve durable and flexible coating. - Created a rig for tubing to be upheld during UV curing process.

Honors and Awards

BME Best Capstone Award, May 2025 Outstanding Dual Enrollment Award (Montgomery College), May 2021 Outstanding Mathematics Student (Montgomery College), May 2021
