About College Bowl

Think of it like a team version of Jeopardy®: four people on each of two teams, answering a series of questions for points. First, tossups are answered by single members of the team - no collaboration - after which the team that correctly answered the tossup question can answer a bonus question. Bonus questions are generally multi-part questions about related material from another academic field. Unlike Jeopardy®, though, the focus is on purely academic subjects: this is the stuff you should be learning in college. Though Carnegie Mellon no longer participates in "official" events - those sponsored by College Bowl Incorporated - the team does frequent the more challenging events on two competing circuits run by the Academic Competition Federation and National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC.

An occasional diversion from the academic format is TRASH, something best described as "Pop Culture Quiz Bowl". Rather than answering questions about literature, history, and sciences, the team instead has to answer questions about music, movies, sports, and television. In the 2002-2003 year, Carnegie Mellon hosted the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament for TRASH. In April 2005, CMU joint-hosted TRASHionals with the University of Pittsburgh.
