Affirmative Action Survey

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AT CMU?

Dear CMU undergraduate,

The University of Michigan is currently being questioned by the federal government for their admissions policy regarding Affirmative Action. The Bush administration believes that it is legally inappropriate for the University of Michigan to consider things such as a student's ethnicity in making admissions decisions based on the reasoning that students of greater or equivalent intellectual merit can be denied admission based on their race. Currently, a student group on campus that is opposed to affirmative action programs is drafting a report on this issue to be presented to CMU administration.

We would like to know how would you prefer that CMU Admissions to weigh the following criteria for admission to CMU. A higher number means you think that the consideration should be weighted higher in admissions decisions. You will be asked to justify your selections on the following page.

ConsiderationNot relevant for admission decisions--------Vital for admission decisions
Country of origin (Canada, England, Pakistan, China, etc)0123456789

Please use the back of this page to explain your reasoning for preferring that University Admissions weigh the above considerations in the method you expressed. One or two paragraphs is sufficient, though you may take as much space to express your opinion as you like.
