At Carnegie Mellon, deadlines were like shadows—always following you, sometimes looming larger than life.
Ishita, a bright-eyed L3D (Learning for 3D) student, sat in Hunt Library, staring at her laptop. Assignment 1 glared back at her with a blinking cursor and a stubborn dataset.
She had promised herself: “No distractions. Tonight, I finish this.” But then, a whisper floated across the room—“Free pizza in the UC!”
Her brain short-circuited. Pizza. Free. Two words capable of bending any grad student’s willpower.
“I’ll just grab one slice and come back,” she thought. Famous last words.
One slice turned into three, then a plate of samosas from another booth, then cookies at a networking event she hadn’t even signed up for. By the time she waddled back to her dorm, blissfully full, it was past midnight.
Canvas stared at her with merciless indifference: Deadline: 11:59 PM. Submission closed.
Ishita slumped into her chair. “L3D stands for Learning 3D, not Losing Deadlines, right?” she muttered. But deep down, she knew—at CMU, free food wasn’t free. It always came at the cost of something else.
That night, Ishita learned a valuable grad school truth: assignments may test your coding skills, but free food tests your discipline. And sometimes… free food wins.
