Hani Rashid Lecture Response

The Asymptote website was the first thing that piqued my interest in Hani Rashid and his work at the firm. It was so brilliantly designed that my jaw kept dropping the first time I took the time to navigate around it on my computer. I have a tremendous respect for anyone who is that skilled with a computer, for my skills are far from reaching that level. Naturally, I was eagerly anticipating Monday's lecture.

After seeing the many projects that Rashid and Asymptote have undertaken, I have to say I was most thrilled by Carlos Miele's shop in New York City and the Hydra-Pier in the Netherlands. Miele's shop was so intriguing in terms of design and the use of that sheen and reflective white, I want to go shop there just to experience the store as a whole. I loved the "floating" mannequins too, and the ring of light on the floor surrounding them. The Hydra-Pier completely fascinated me with how the movement of water was harnessed in such a particular way. Also, the bold moves that were made throughout the building/pavilion were very well thought-out, and I liked how Rashid managed to embrace the artificiality of the landscape and completely run with it.

I have to confess, in terms of my personal preference, I like the more traditionalist ways of thinking, architecturally speaking. Classic homes, such as old tudors and manors, especially old stone mansions, appeal to me on an unbelievable level. Yet there was something so very fresh about Rashid and Asymptote's work, so much so that I could see myself working very comfortably at the "cubicles" designed for Knoll. The BMW and Mercedes buildings were so innovative in their design, yet there was something in them that very strongly appealed to my "classic" eye. I still don't know why they intrigue me so much!!

As for the New York Stock Exchange...well...it has to be one of the most impressive digital "hubs" that I have ever seen. I don't even know how to describe it; it was so unbelievable. Hani Rashid proved to me that Asymptote is an incredible firm simply through that project alone.
