One of my interests is sustainable agriculture. Being from Kansas, I have a great deal of appreciation for the The Land Institute in Salina, KS.
Their paradigm is to mimic the diversity and sustaining nature of the
prairie when growing food crops.
Their goal is to develop perennial grain crops. Just think about that for a moment. Perennial grain crops. Pretty
revolutionary, and if they succeed I predict a new "Green Revolution" in agriculture. Imagine restoring soil health and feeding people
at the same time.
If you're interested in learning more about what they do, they host
a conference every year in late Sept/early Oct out on "the Land." It's an
informal conference (camping onsite is common for the attendees), and you have a
chance to meet other folks, both scientist and non-scientists, interested in sustainable
agriculture/living. Also, there's a barn dance, which is
well worth the trip!
I enjoy taking pictures, especially of small things and food. I post my pictures at Flickr, a
great site for hosting and sharing photos. I'm still learning about taking good photographs and I imagine I'll be a life-long learner. Below are
thumbnails of my recent favorites.
It seems everyone in grad school loves to cook, and I'm not exception. If you have good Indian recipes, let me know. I'm not vegan, but recently discovered The Post-Punk Kitchen, a great resource for the formidable vegan baking.
