Transplant Medicine in Numbers

•       Every 10 minutes, someone is added to the national transplant waiting list.

•       On average, 20 people die each day while waiting for a transplant (more than 7,000 candidates died in 2016).

•       1 person can donate up to 8 lifesaving organs: heart, 2 lungs, liver pancreas, 2 kidneys, and intestines

•       1 donor can also improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes

•       33,611 transplants were performed in 2016

•       About 710,000 transplants were performed between 1988 and 2017 in the USA

•       More than 116,000 people are currently on the transplant waiting list in the USA

•       95% of American adults support organ donation

•       54% are actually signed up as donors

•       Only 3 in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation
