Troy "Schliemann's trench": Heinrich Schliemann, an enthusiastic amateur, believed the Iliad to be an historically accurate account and set out to find ancient Troy. He excavated this trench; found many gold treasures; and announced the discovery of the "Treasures of Priam", the king of Troy. Susequent and more systematic work showed these artefacts to belong to a much earlier period.
