Ephesus: The library of Celsus was built in 115 AD and damaged by earthquake in 1000 AD. It has been re-erected with the original stonework. One large room is behind the two-tiered facade. It held ~12,000 scrolls and was one of the largest libraries of its time.
Close-up images of the four statues in niches at the front of the library are shown on another page. (Use the "Back" button to return.)
