51-274 Design and Social Change

Units:9.0
Department:Design
Related URLs:http://www.cmu.edu/cfa/design/

In this course we will examine the important relationships of history, culture, policies and the environment in communication design and industrial design. Conversely we will study the ways in which design can affect our culture and environment, both positively and negatively. Our primary focus will be from the 1950's to the present. While various cultures will be acknowledged and discussed, the major emphasis will be on Western culture. Through lectures, videos, reading and projects, students will develop their ability to incorporate historical context and consideration of potential consequences into their design process.
