In the following four activities, you will find various excerpts written by experts in a specific technical area. Their main audience includes a wide range of well-educated people-both technical and non-technical. Although they believe their writing was fine, their supervisors have advised them to make their message understood by both audience types.

The technical audience is well educated and has a good understanding of the technical content in their fields. Although the non-technical audiences are also well-educated, their understanding of the technical terms is limited.

Try to select the most appropriate options so that the experts can communicate to each audience most effectively.

Guide

  • When discussing a problem or negative issues, avoid blaming a specific individual (or individuals) by either making an actor implicit using passive voice, or make the cause of the problem the subject (i.e., actor) of your sentence.
  • Focus on the present problem, and do not emphasize the person who made an error.
