In the following three activities, you will find various excerpts written by experts in a specific technical area. Their main audience includes a wide range of educated people-both technical and non-technical.

Although they believe their writing was fine, their supervisors have advised them to make their message understood by both audience types.

The technical audience is well-educated and has a good understanding of the technical content in their fields. Although the non-technical audiences are also well-educated, their understanding of the technical terms is limited.

Try to select the most appropriate options so that the experts can communicate to each audience most effectively.

Guide

  • Avoid using overly technical terms your audience is not familiar with.
  • Try to cut your language down to only the essential message you must communicate to your readers. For each detail, ask “does this piece of information make a difference?”
