Student Government at CMU


The purpose of Student Government shall be to safeguard and promote the welfare of the Student Body by: enacting legislation, supervising and coordinating the execution and financing of extracurricular activities, effecting punitive measures with respect to the rules outlined in the constitution, and by acting as a representative body to present the views of students to the faculty and administration.

  1. Graduate Student Assembly
    Represents Graduate students to faculty and administration.
    Allocates funds to student groups and events from a discretionary budget.
    Propose and enact legislation and ratify and create University policies.

    Joint undergraduate/graduate committee that determines student organization budgets for each semester that a budget is requested from the Student Activities fee.

  4. Executive Branch
    1. Student Body President
      Represents Graduate and Undergraduate students.
      Additional representative of students to administration.  Also can create ad-hoc committees to inform Senate and GSA.
      Responsible for serving on several University committees and attending all Senate and GSA meetings.
      Has a small discretionary budget.
      1. Student Body Vice President
        Assists Student Body President and will fill in when necessary.

      Responsible for performing periodic audits of student organizations.
      Can freeze the budget of any organization.
      Has a small discretionary budget.
