SPIRIT is a minority orgnization that was founded at CMU over a quarter of a century ago. It was first named the Black Student Organization, but they wanted a unique name that reflected the people who belonged to it. Thus, the name SPIRIT was formed.

Our chief objective is to promote African American awareness on campus. We do this through cultural and social activities. Every other week we hold general body meetings where the whole organization comes together to discuss local, political, and social issues that we encounter everyday.

An event that SPIRIT participates in is Carnegie Mellon's Carnival Weekend. Carnival is a time when most campus organizations come together to see who is the "cream of the crop." Every year a theme is chosen and each organization has to build a booth that relates to the theme. Along with booth is buggy ... the event that SPIRIT reigns and rules. Our buggy races are like box car races but even better. Trophies are awarded to the winning organization. We have been on top every year.

The SPIRIT logo is the brainchild of Mark Chambers, who graduated in Architecture in 2001. The logo can be interpreted either as a star or compass, both navigation tools used for centuries. The star/compass represents our goals toward which we strive as individuals and as a community. The red, green, yellow, and black are colors which have great significance toward African-Americans --- red represents the blood shed by our ancestors so that we may be free; green represents purity and nature; yellow represents the sun that provides our warmth and light; and black represents the color of our skin. This logo and color scheme is displayed on our flag which usually hangs outside the SPIRIT House on Margaret Morrison Street.
