Abstract
The main motivation for the development of the hexahedral grid generator HEXAR at SGI/Cray Research is to create a tool requiring minimum input and interaction from the user. We shall present in this paper the main ideas behind the HEXAR grid generator system: automatic creation of a structured base grid, projection step, feature edge and feature vertex capturing and improvement of the grid quality by surface and mesh smoothing. We shall discuss the user's interaction with the HEXAR system. Furthermore, we shall present applications of the HEXAR system to generate meshes for a four stroke engine and a diesel engine. Some recently added features, such as multiple materials capability, will also be described and illustrated by an example.
