Abstract
This paper discusses techniques which can extend the flexibility and applicability of structured meshes. These gains are achieved by incorporating local regions of unstructured mesh within a globally structured mesh. By utilising this approach, mesh enrichment to flowfield parameters can be performed, mesh quality can be improved and, in addition, a method is described which provides a means by which any structured mesh can be taken and generalised to include additional components of arbitrary geometrical complexity. The techniques will be illustrated in two dimensions with applications to the compressible flow over single and multi- element aerofoil configurations.
